Update to Publishing Schedule & Free Book offer

Greetings readers!

We’re in the midst of an especially busy period here, so I’ll cover a few topics in this post. Most excitingly, we will be sending two fabulous new titles to the printer this week. Here they are, with just brief descriptions for now:

Magic Chess Moves is a fabulous exercise/puzzle book endorsed by David Navara, who expresses his enthusiasm for both the book and its author in his foreword. We tweaked the title and revamped the cover, taking advantage of Kallia’s design skills.

Beating the Queen’s Gambit โ€“ Indian Style! is the sister volume to Playing the Nimzo-Indian. What do you think of the title? Personally I love it (probably because it was my idea). The majority of the book is devoted to the position in the cover photo, which is clearly a Queen’s Gambit Declined โ€“ but of course, we are getting there via a 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 move order. Renier also offers great recommendations against all White’s other options after 1.d4 Nf6.

One week from today, I will be leaving for the Budapest Olympiad. I’m proud to announce that I’ve been selected to play on Board 1 for Scotland, for the fourth consecutive Olympiad. As Chief Editor at QC, my top priority will be ensuring that the above two books get sent away for printing before I leave. Second priority will be making sure my colleagues are well placed to keep advancing our other upcoming titles while I’m away.

Finally, the default free book in our web-shop offer will be Attacking the Spanish for September and October. Despite its age, this is still a cracking book with insightful explanations from our good friend Sabino Brunello. I have a particular soft spot for this title, as it was the first book I edited upon joining the company in 2009.

This post is long enough, so I won’t repeat the full details of the free-book offer. Most of you know the deal already; and if you don’t, simply go back a step and scroll down to see the most recent blog post on the topic, five posts below this one.

  1. In a previous post nearer the start of the year John Shaw mentioned that Quality chess will probably publish two other opening books besides Renier’s. And since then no new information come about. Could you please provide any new information about these books. Thank you.
Also last week I received Woodpecker 2 and Reniers Nimzo book and they are fantastic. Thank you.

    Joseph Wilson.

  2. Joseph – thanks for the nice feedback.

I was going to save the next bit of news for a special blog post, but have run out of time before the Olympiad, and it’s true that you’ve all been waiting a long time. So…

The first of the opening books will be a concise but potent 1.e4 repertoire from Nikos Ntirlis. Loosely based on his Twitter ideas, but with lots of revisions and some lines completely replaced. It will be great.

Nick – the excerpt will go up early next week. I have been working overtime this week (including nearly all of Sunday) to make sure MCM and BTQG-IS! got finished and sent for printing; as well as sending off digital files to our ebook partners. I haven’t had time to prepare excerpts, so am leaving it for Kostis to create them and Bimalka to get them up on the website.

I’ll be in touch again in a few weeks after Budapest.

    1. Thank you for the reply !!! That’s sounds very interesting, I’m looking forward to it. Good luck and have fun in Budapest Andrew :)))

    2. Good morning Andrew,

I have seen the excerpt for BTQG-IS! and it looks like precisely the book I was envisigaing. I am very much looking forward to it.

On a slightly different note, I just wanted to ask if Quality Chess has anything on 1 Nf3 in the works for White? I don’t mean a KIA repertoire with a rigid Nf3/g3/Bg2/0-0/d3 setup, something more flexible which might include those lines (if appropriate) as well as Symmetrical Englishes, Reti’s, Catalan’s, KIDs, etc, etc.

Ntirlis covers some of this ground in his English book, but not 1 Nf3 d5 2 g3 (say) lines.

      Thank you very much.

      James

  3. Hi,

is there any new information on the other opening book, that is going to be published beides the book weiten by Mr. Ntirlis?

    Have a nice day
    Stefan

    1. Sorry for my bad writing. Actually I would like to know if there is any new information on the other opening book. The announcement of the book by Mr. Ntirlis is great.

      Have A nice evening

  4. I’ve just found out Quality Chess declined the offer of publishing Gawains 1.e4 e5 course into paperback. Please can you publish his course into a book. I’ve been waiting for a serious 1.e4 e5 repertoire book to come out . It’s been years since a serious 1.e4 e5 book was released. Can someone at Quality Chess tell me why they declined the offer and if they’re considering or have changed their mind?

  5. James – We don’t currently have that type of 1.Nf3 book in the works, but I agree it would be a great companion for those of us using Nikos’s 1.c4 book. Personally I am mostly going 1.c4 but also favouring 1.Nf3 from time to time, depending on the opponent’s preferences.

Stefan – I’ll announce the other opening book in due course when I’m ready.

Joseph – If we declined to publish this or any other Chessable course before, I’m not sure what makes you think we would reverse the decision at a later date when its selling potential has diminished. We don’t owe you an explanation for our decisions; but if it’s a case where Chessable gets a sizeable headstart in selling it to large numbers of customers who will no longer be interested in our physical copy, I’m sure you can imagine how this is less attractive than books that we can publish ourselves.

    1. Good morning Andrew,

Thank you very much for your reply. Hopefully we might see something in the near future on 1 Nf3 from Quality Chess.

I hope you have a good week.

      Best wishes,

      James

  6. Hi Andrew,

I was wondering if you could share any updates on 2 books I’ve been waiting for with great interest:
Tibor Karolyi’s Part 2 on Spassky
Mihal Marin’s – Learn from the Legends 2.

Is it realistic to consider these books as a possible Christmas present this year?

  7. “The first of the opening books will be a concise but potent 1.e4 repertoire from Nikos Ntirlis. Loosely based on his Twitter ideas, but with lots of revisions and some lines completely replaced. It will be great. ”

I’m not a native english speaker si I don’t understand “POTENT” there is too many synonyms for this word in french.

Could you have some basic informations on the choosen variations?
(for example , Scoth, siCilan c3, Tarrash againt the french…)

    And the approximative schedule?
    Thank you

  8. Tom – Legends 2 is being edited, with publication scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. Spassky 2 will follow slightly behind it.

FredPhil – potent means something like ‘powerful’. We are working hard to get this title printed for a December publication date. It won’t be long before an excerpt will be available, containing a complete list of the information you’ve requested.

  9. Any pre-2024 titles cannot be published on the NiC platform due to the terms of the 2024 merger, which gave digital rights for such titles to Chess. com. For newer titles though, we are delighted to make our books available on the NiC app, giving readers another way to enjoy our content.
